DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) is a 1-year pre-sea training programme that prepares students to become Deck Officers in the Merchant Navy and begin the pathway toward becoming a Captain.

The DNS course duration is 1 year residential training, followed by onboard sea training with shipping companies.

Yes. The DNS course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Government of India, making it valid for Merchant Navy careers.

Students who have completed 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) with required marks can apply for DNS admission.

Candidates need minimum 60% aggregate in PCM and 50% marks in English in either 10th or 12th standard.

Yes. Students with Engineering Diploma (Mechanical, Electrical, Marine, Civil, or related branches) with minimum 55% marks are eligible.

Yes. Students with B.Sc degree with Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Electronics, or Computer Science can apply with required marks.

The maximum age limit is generally 25 years, with relaxation as per DG Shipping norms.

Yes. Candidates must pass DG Shipping approved medical examination before joining the course.

Candidates should have 6/6 normal eyesight, and colour blindness is not allowed for DNS admission.

After DNS completion, candidates begin as Deck Cadets and later progress to officer-level positions onboard ships

Career progression generally follows:
Deck Cadet → Third Officer → Second Officer → Chief Officer → Captain / Master Mariner.

Yes. DNS is an officer-track programme, and after required sea service and competency exams, candidates can become Captain (Master Mariner).
